What is Sofran

Short-term treatment of irritation of the esophagus when medicine cannot be taken by mouth. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Sofran is a proton pump inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Important safety information:

• Sofran may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Sofran with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
• Contact your doctor if you have any symptoms of a bleeding ulcer, such as black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds; or if you experience throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or trouble swallowing.
• Sofran may increase the risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures. The risk may be greater if you use Sofran in high doses, for long periods of time, or if you are over 50 years old. Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Contact your doctor if you have any questions about this information.
• Check with your doctor to see whether you should take a calcium and vitamin D supplement while you use Sofran.
• Sofran may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are using Sofran.
• Sofran should be used with caution in Asian patients; the risk of side effects may be increased in these patients.
• Use Sofran with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially hip, wrist, and spine fractures.
• Sofran should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Sofran while you are pregnant. It is not known if Sofran is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Sofran.

Sofran side effects

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; headache; nausea; pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; stomach pain.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions ; bone pain; chest pain; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness; vision changes.

Can Sofran be stopped immediately or do I have to stop the consumption gradually to ween off?

In some cases, it always advisable to stop the intake of some medicines gradually because of the rebound effect of the medicine.

How should I take Sofran?

Use Sofran as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Sofran is usually given as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Sofran at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Sofran. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.
• Do not use Sofran if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.
• If you are also taking an imidazole antifungal, take it at least 2 hours before using Sofran.

• Sofran should only be used for a short time (up to 7 days) until you are able to take medicine by mouth. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.
• If you miss a dose of Sofran, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Who should not take Sofran?

• Clarithromycin or voriconazole because it may increase the risk of lansoprazole's side effects
• Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), digoxin, or tacrolimus because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Sofran
• Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), clopidogrel, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, atazanavir), iron, or theophylline because their effectiveness may be decreased by Sofran
